Answers to the Sandlapper Quiz, #1

2) Who won the first Carolina-Clemson football game?
The Gamecocks (of course), 12-6. That first "Big Thursday" game in 1896 was held at the State Fairgrounds, then located on Elmwood Avenue in Columbia. John Chandler Griffin, author of The Encyclopedia of Gamecock Football, adds these notes: "At that time, horse racing was the main attraction at the State Fair. The football team was sort of like the chess club. They started the football game at 11 in the morning so they would be finished in time for the races."

A mortifying thought, to any true Gamecock or Tiger fan. . . .

By the way, you can obtain an autographed copy of The Encyclopedia for $9.95 postpaid from Griffin at 546 Rock Springs Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.
