SC Life

Ranked as the 22nd best national public university by U.S. News and World Report, Clemson University is a vibrant student-centered community that thrives on leadership, collaboration and a winning spirit — in academics, athletics and life. To become one of the country’s top-tier research universities, Clemson University has combined the scientific and technological horsepower of a major research university with the academic and social environment of a small college.

In addition to educating college students, Clemson has created life science programs for middle school and high school students and their teachers. Through SC Life, teachers have access to workshops and graduate-level science courses, community-based research projects, classroom resources including virtual field trips, and loans of equipment footlockers. SC Life enrichment and research opportunities for students include the Biology Merit Exam, Summer Program for Research Interns, Undergraduate Research Program, and laboratory field trips to the South Carolina DNA Learning Center at Clemson University.

SC Life is supported by $5.4 million in awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Undergraduate Science Education Program since 1998.

Teacher Resources

Clemson has made available various resources that were developed by teachers during previous SC Life courses or that they think are important resources you should reference. During SC Life courses, teachers often develop lesson plans and activities that are course content specific but are easily adapted to all classrooms.  In addition to lesson plans and posters, SC Life has developed a series of CDs based on the organisms and natural history of South Carolina. ‘Equipment Footlockers’ are also available for teachers to check-out for a semester after an introduction to the equipment and activities and laboratories that may be used in conjunction with the equipment.

SC Life materials are available for use only in non-profit educational activities. Any other uses, including activities involving fees for instruction and/or materials, must receive permission from the SC Life Project Director. Contact Ginger Foulk, SC Life Project Manager, with questions about any of our SC Life materials or programs.

SC Life Community-Based Research Projects

Clemson partners with teachers and students in selected schools throughout South Carolina to guide them through unique research projects that focus on their local communities. SC Life will assist one group of schools each year to complete their own Community-Based Research Project. For a more information on current and past projects, click here.

Laboratory Field Trips

Using lessons developed by the Dolan DNA Learning Center and by K-12 teachers and Clemson researchers, middle and high school classes can engage in hands-on exercises in biotechnology, genetics, forensics and natural history. These laboratory field trip lessons conducted at the South Carolina DNA Learning Center cover life sciences from molecules and cells to whole organisms and ecosystems. The HHMI award sponsors 20 classes each year. <more>

Virtual Field Trips

A collaboration between the SC Life Project and South Carolina ETV, offers you the chance to take virtual field trips into South Carolina’s ecosystems. These trips offer interactive panoramic Quicktime VR movies, movie clips of wildlife, and links to other multimedia objects and text and are available online and on CD.  These field trips were designed specifically for schools lacking easy access to natural areas.  The field trips also come with student worksheets and teacher answers sheets downloadable as PDF files. <more>
