Show your students how the South’s most popular building material is made with a class tour of Carolina Ceramics Brick Company in northeast Columbia. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility boasts the brick industry’s largest robot. Our highly automated plant fascinates students of all ages.
We offer your students a lesson in “green building.” Brick is one of the oldest and most environmentally friendly building materials on the planet. It’s made from clay and shale, two of the most abundant natural resources, requires no maintenance and lasts for thousands of years. It’s an excellent insulator that conserves energy. It’s fireproof, insect proof and water resistant. It’s completely recyclable.
We also demonstrate the art of “green manufacturing.” We use rainwater, run off water and recycled water to make our product. Our kilns are high efficiency natural gas. We recycle clay from bricks that don’t meet standards and reuse heat from the kiln cooling areas. And we perform complete reclamation on all our clay mining lands.
Students even get the chance to make a clay sculpture to take home with them.
