Nobel Prize Winners from SC

Robert F. Furchgott

Robert Furchgott was born in Charleston in 1916. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998. His research revealed that nitric oxide is an important compound in many aspects of cardiovascular physiology and led to the creation of Viagra.

Joseph L. Goldstein

Born in Kingstree in 1940, Joseph Goldstein won the Nobel for Physiology or Medicine in 1985. A biochemist and geneticist, Goldstein was a pioneer in the study of metabolism and low density lipoprotein, otherwise known as LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. His work showed the link between LDL and coronary artery disease.

Charles H. Townes

This Greenville native was born in 1915. His work in quantum electronics led to the invention of the laser and he won the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work. He taught at Columbia University and MIT and was awarded 27 honorary degrees from various universities.
